How and why to start a business book club

: Book clubs have been quite a rage over the last few years. Fueled in part by Oprah and others, the concept of reading a book then gathering with others who have read the same book has become “cool” again. The reasons people have found them valuable include: - a great way to have meaningful conversation. - a way to support your own reading habit (I need to have the book read before the meeting!). - a way to form a community – to have a great reason to gather with other people to bond. - A way to learn something in a fun way. It is for all of those same reasons and more that I suggest and encourage business book clubs. Maybe you would like to start one within your organization or maybe you would prefer to build one among colleagues from outside of work. Either way this article will outline the keys to help you build a successful single event or long-term club. 1. Market the idea. Once you are excited about this concept, use your influence and knowledge of your target group to market the concept to them. Even if your goal is to build a long-term “club.” Don’t market it that way – that requires too big of a commitment for many people. You are trying to encourage people to try something new that will requires their time both to read and participate.

Rather than inviting them to make a long-term commitment, encourage them to read one book, then once they see the fun and the value, you will have them hooked. 2. Gain commitment. Once you have sold people on the idea make sure you gain a commitment to participate. People are really committing to two things: reading the book, and coming to the “meeting.” After all, if no one comes to the meeting, (or comes without having read much of the book) you won’t have much of a conversation! 3. Start small. Identify the number of people you will feel good about having involved.

Experience shows that if you have 4-5 highly committed people you will have a successful experience. More is fine too, but you don’t have to have everyone in the organization or every person at a certain level participating for it to be successful. 4. Start easy. Not everyone is an avid reader.

So pick a book that will be an easy sell in terms of topic and length. Picking the new 450-page book you are interested in might not be the best place to start. Remember that the value of the book club experience is more than just the book you read, but the conversations and ideas they stimulate. 5. Make it fun. This is a part of your marketing effort.

Have food. Decorate the room, reminder invitations, etc. in a theme suggested by the book. Make the event itself something that will both encourage people to attend and create a buzz so other people want to attend the next one. 6. Have a facilitator. Someone needs to be responsible for facilitating the conversation.

Beyond the normal facilitator roles of keeping others participating that person needs to have a few questions prepared that are designed to stimulate conversation. 7. Facilitate lightly. The facilitator should facilitate but not lead. Remember that you are after input, participation and having people involved in the conversation. Don’t let it become a lecture.

8. Keep the group involved. Beyond the group’s involvement in the conversation itself, get everyone’s input into future meeting times, setups, facilitators, and perhaps most of all, books. When people feel involved, they will be more invested in the success of the next event, and beyond. I have helped organizations think through how to start these groups and have facilitated these discussions. While we have talked about the benefits that can be gained by individuals who participate in these groups, the organizational benefits can be huge as well. For the investment in a book for each person, organizations can create powerful conversation, deep professional development and better relationships.

Aikido exercise teaching training

Teaching, training, and exercising Aikido Since the development of Aikido from the hands of its founder Morihei Ueshiba, it has gone through drastic changes. From the technique, practice, purpose, teaching, and training, Aikido is being interpreted in so many ways. Despite these glaring changes, the basic principle of Aikido still remains: a martial art that aims to achieve peace and harmony without instigating attack and force. BEFORE YOU PRACTICE If you are into aikido and already been enrolled in one of the classes, you must familiarize yourself with everything that you need to know about the martial art. You must realize that the practice of aikido starts once you have entered the "dojo" or the place where demonstrations, teachings, and training take place. The aikido trainees are instructed and expected to exercise and observe proper etiquette at all times. Here are some guidelines for those you have just started exercising or training for aikido: 1. Attendance is important and a must. Indeed, the only way for you to improve in aikido is by attending regular classes and continuous training. Although attendance is not mandatory in most dojos, you better keep in mind that for you to learn and master aikido, you must be there when you have training so you wouldn’t miss any of the aikido teachings and trainings. Most aikido practitioners suggest that for a student to advance in aikido, he or she should practice at least twice a week. Aside from not missing out something, attending aikido classes regularly can also help you cultivate self-discipline. 2. Make your training your own responsibility. Just like in any martial art training, Aikido requires attention and dedication from you. And since you are the one who is interested in learning the martial, you should also be the one in-charge of your own exercise and training. Once you have decided to practice Aikido, it is given that you should be the one who is responsible for your proficiency and improvement. Although instructors and senior students will be there to guide you, they wouldn’t be the one responsible for your improvement. So if you really want to improve in this martial art, make sure that you observe effectively before asking for any help and that you try to learn the techniques on your own first before you partake in any demonstration. 3. Bear in mind that Aikido training includes more than one technique. Aside from the physical demonstrations, training in aikido includes observation and modification of both physical and psychological patterns of the students' thought and behavior. Since there are so many techniques to learn, an aikido student should be ready to react to circumstances so he or she can cultivate awareness. 4. Memorize the basic teachings and principles of the martial art. Aikido is known as one of the non-aggressive means of self-defense. That is why most aikido trainings involve cooperative activities. In order to learn and excel in the martial art, you must be cooperative enough with your partner so you will both reap the benefits of aikido. Make sure that you're careful when training and practicing aikido because some of the techniques can kill or damage when not practice judiciously. 5. Be prepared for anything and everything. Exercising, teaching, and training in Aikido is not simple. Because of the dynamic nature of the martial art, it can be very frustrating if you haven’t prepared yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically. Part of the training is learning to cope with frustrations that come along the training. The best solution whenever frustration sets in is that the practitioner should observe what is or are the possible causes of this frustration and how can they overcome these challenges. They should avoid comparing themselves with others and continue improving their techniques.

Publish your own community magazine

It is not surprising that for almost every subject or topic you can think of today, somewhere online you will be able to find a source of information to guide you. Think of a promising business opportunity and there is no doubt that someone will have already cornered the market somewhere. Coming up with an original idea, something a little different from the rest, is not easy, and if you do eventually make a start, the competition is guaranteed to be tough. So why not take a look closer to home, at your home town itself. Depending on the size of your home town you may possibly have thousands of potential customers eager for a product that you could place in front of them - something guranteed to make them want to purchase it, and with no competition to be concerned about. I have discovered such a product, something that few people associated with my home town can resist. The best thing is that they are willing to come back month after month for the same product. In fact, when I think about it, those people, my potential customers, actually give me something that they are willing to purchase back from me! So what's all this about? What is it that local people find so irresistable? A community magazine of course. Now before you head off to the next offer, stop for a minute and give it a little thought. What exactly are we talking about? What exactly is a community magazine? Do not mistake what I am telling you with some of the other community magazine ideas available on the internet, which entail you publish a free booklet full of local business advertisements to be distributed freely around your local neighbourhood. The magazines I am talking about here, have served me well for over two and a half years and provide factual information and interest that are not available in such format anywhere else. This is not a plan that is going to cost you thousands of pounds simply to purchase the idea or franchise - in fact if you follow what I did to the letter, you could establish your own community magazine without any investment whatsoever. I did it without any capital or previous experience and I now distribute almost 3,000 commercially printed magazines around my home town every single month. I give people what they want. There is no hard selling involved because the magazines, by their very nature, sell themself. Take a look on the internet and search for something connected with publishing a community magazine and I believe you will discover that this opportunity is one of the few that is yet to be exploited. That will change no doubt, but by that time you will have already taken control of your own area - won't you?

Safety trip tips for travelers

Traveling can be a lot of fun. But especially in places foreign to you, there can be certain risks that might make your adventures unsafe. So here are some travel trip tips to help make your fun times safer. 1. Research before your go. Search the Internet for travel advisories and the latest safety tips from state organizations and other top sites that turn up in your favorite search engines like: travel. state. gov cdc. gov/travel state. gov/travelandbusiness Check to see if there are any sickness reports, travelers’ alerts and other concerns you should be familiar with before leaving home. Then check maps, like at MapQuest, to make sure of your travel route and the best way to get there. A travel agency like AAA (Automobile Association of America) can help plan routes for you, checking road construction along the way and any detours. 2. Use the buddy system. Try not to travel alone, when possible, so that you have a safe friend along and you can both keep an eye out for each other. If you do travel alone, leave your itinerary with a trusted family member or friend and have that person make sure you check in upon your return. And when you travel, lock your vehicle and accommodations’ doors, stashing your valuables in the hotel or ship safe when you have the option to do so. Don’t leave cash lying around and remain accountable; i. e. don’t get so drunk that you don’t have control over your senses and environment. 3. Be prepared, like the Boy Scouts! Plan ahead for emergencies and bring a light first aid kit, prescription medications for those traveling with you, and any over-the-counter items you may need like Pepto-Bismol, anti-diarrhea liquid or tablets, pain killer, anti-itch cream, sunscreen. It’s no fun to get something like diarrhea while you’re out in the jungle far away from any drugstore or convenience store. So plan and bring items you may need. 4. Check out your accommodations! Ask for digital photos of your accommodations and the surrounding area, if possible, before your commit to staying in the place of choice. Because some places paint beautiful pictures of the area, then when you arrive, you may find you’re in the worst part of town in a dirty, roach-invested hole. So ask about the area, get travel brochures and check around. If there are no photos, if may be well worth an extra $10-20 per night to stay elsewhere – in a place that does have photos to show off the accommodations.

Integration in european union

Romania will join the European Union next year, among with Bulgaria, their neighbours. After 10 years of hard work, this success come after a long period of politic instability and blocked projects. Taking into account our country's present circumstances, all business sectors have to get in the line with the European community's requests. Small and large business owners should pay more attention to the market's demand and make all the arrangements necessary to provide a qualitative product for us all. They are now trying to obtain all the certificates needed to enter the new, extended, market; first of all they have to make the proof that they are producing a competitive product, similar to the one aur "new brothers" deliver. Besides that, for a Romanian successful company, logistics has to become an important issue starting the 1st of January 2007; new problems arise now: they need new means of transportation, new machines and qualified personnel to make sure they fulfill all the contract's demands they have already signed and established with the new clients. So, we have to do more than starting using a new "language" ( the one of profitability), we should assume the liability of thinking and performing by certain rules (European, in this case) to achieve the desired effect by all of us. It is not enough to become an European community member, we have to work to fulfill the objectives stated when we applied for this membership and stick to our goal until the end. Many people are waiting for this integration for many years now, hoping they will have a better life and that things will be changing for the good in Romania. This only remains to be seen as the proffesionals predictions are not that good. A thing is certain, some things will be better, for example the possiblility of travelling abroad without the need of a passaport visa. We have big hopes for next year!

M1 abrams main battle tank

The tank of battle of M1 Abrams is combat the principal tank of the army of the United States and the marine bodies of the United States, with three principal versions being to start deployed in 1980: M1, the M1A1, and the M1A2. The last versions of the M1A2 have new armor and package of electronics. It is baptized name of the General Creighton Abrams, former chief of army of personnel and ordering armored regiment of the army thirty-seventh. M1 Abrams replaced M60 Patton in the service of the USA, as well as the M48A5. It, however, was useful beside the M60A3, which had written the service right two years before (1978) M1, during more than one decade. The first attempt to replace the series of M60 ageing of tanks was the abortive MBT-70, developed with Germany. M60 Patton were itself a progressive evolution of a design starting with the era of the Second World War M26 Pershing, with a very large profile, and the rather average armor and the weapon compared with the contemporary Soviet designs. The MBT-70 was very ambitious, as much of American programs of weapons of the Sixties. It had a system of missile launched by gun, the suspension of kneeling, a driver placed in the turret, and various the other ideas which finally proved not succeeded. The cancellation of this project prepared the ground for the tank much more successful of M1 Abrams, which did not incorporate the majority of the tedious innovations tested by the MBT-70. M1 Abrams was designed in the Chrysler Defense (in 1979, Division bought by Division of the defense of Chrysler of ground systems of General Dynamics) and is currently produced by company of General Dynamics in Lima, in Ohio, and the first written service of army of the USA in 1980. A version improved of M1, the M1A1, was presented in 1985. The M1A1 has M256 gun of smoothbore of 120 millimeters developed by Rheinmetall AG of Germany for leopard 2, the improved armor, and a protection system of CBRN.
